Originally, espresso makers were invented in the early 1900’s so that workers could brew and drink a cup of joe during the schedule brief work breaks. In other words, espresso makers were invented as a timesavings measure, meant to save big corporations money. Since then, it has become a luxury coveted by those who love the dark, richly flavored frothy brew.
The first espresso makers used steam heat to force the water through the ground coffee beans. It was discovered that forcing the super hot water through the beans meant the beans had to brew for a shorter period of time and yet still deliver on flavour. Of course, the beans had to be manually ground before the brewing process began, and it took significant skill on the part of the operator to control the heat and pressure. Today, espresso can be made much more easily with an automatic espresso maker and grinder.

While the first machines were designed with a spring-piston to force the water through the filter, later models use hydraulics, and now electric pumps do the work of the spring piston. Heat exchangers are used to control the water temperature, insuring the water is hot enough to brew but not so hot as to spoil that strong distinct flavor. And, many units are now manufactured with gauges and safety features that the original models lacked.
While the love of espresso and cappuccino has grown exponentially to include millions of beverage lovers over the decades, so has the cost of a quality machine. While a machine for the home may seem cheap compared to the commercial models, which are designed to stand up to heavy usage and can brew large quantities at one time, you just can’t get a machine that is cheaper than a regular coffee maker, but then again, a regular pot of java can’t give you that same robust taste and alluring froth.
While the concept may have been developed as a means of rushing workers through breaks, it is the flavour of espresso that has kept consumers coming back for more. If you are looking for a gift for a coffee lover or a luxury item for your own kitchen, consider the purchase of espresso makers.
