Senseo pods are similar to other pod coffee systems. They consist of pre measured ground coffee wrapped in a filter, and look like large, round tea bags. These pods can be used in senseo coffee brewers or any other one cup coffee maker. Each pod is made to brew a single serving of coffee. Some find the taste to be weak, but you can use two pods for a stronger cup.
Fans of fresh brewed coffee grounds and those who prefer to grind their own beans may not like senseo coffee pods. Most coffee lovers agree that the best flavour comes from coffee beans being ground just before brewing. The flavour and aroma are more like ground coffee in a can, rather than freshly ground. You have four flavour choices: mild, medium, dark roast and decaf. The mild roast and decaf varieties are the weakest of all the pods.
Philips doesn’t currently make an espresso pod for the senseo, but other pods can be used if you can find one to fit the machine. Many brands of espresso pods are too small for the machine. The crema in espresso is one thing espresso in judged by, so you may not get the taste you want with a pod that is too small. As pods become more widespread, a new generation of espresso pods is sure to become available to fit this machine.
How to use senseo coffee pods
Phillips senseo pods have the benefit of convenience and easy clean up. Senseo coffee machines work much like other single cup machines. The pod is placed in the pod holder and the water reservoir is filled with water. Two pod holders are included with the machine, one for a single pod and one for holding two pods. There are two buttons on the front of the machine, for one or two cup brewing. If you are using two pods for one stronger cup of coffee, put enough water in the reservoir for one cup and press the button for one cup. Wait about a minute after the flashing light indicates the coffee is ready for a hotter cup of coffee.
